Header project

On a project it's possible to set it as "header". What's the meaning of this?

That no "daily" transactions can be posted onto this project id?

What about WIP transactions?

What about budget transactions?

Or other meanings of  header project?

    Hello Daxer,

The header project is something 'left' from earlier AX versions mainly used for classifications of projects and sub-projects. Why would you make use of this feature in the latest AX versions?

So why would you earlier on - and not now?

Considering a top level project id as a summary project id certainly still sounds valid to me.

Why do you think it's only valid historically?

    Hi Daxer Persson,

Tipp: Setup a project with a subproject in AX2009 and in AX2012/AX7, record some transactions and then open for example the cost control sheet and you'll see that there are now better and improved features available to analyze main- and associated sub-projects. That's only one out of many examples were enhancements have been made in this regards.

What is your business scenario / customer requirement that makes you thinking that you need to use header projects?

Basically the feature is available - and I want to use the features/functions. Why limit one self?

Have yet to understand when in AX7 to have (or have not) header projects.

    Hello Daxer Persson,

Would be great if you identify and share a business case for header projects with other AX community members here. Many thanks and best regards,

    Ludwig

Please could we at first stick to my question?

    Thanks :-)

    Hi Daxer,

The header project is used as a grouping for other related projects. You can register some budgets, but cannot post transactions, WIP or forecast on it.

The last time I have seen this function used was a construction/development company who had one big project with multiple customers. Then the header was used for grouping and the sub projects had their own project contract.

Thanks Andre for the confirmation for the purpose of this field in "new AX". Seems to have same function "as always".  Seems possibly Ludwig yesterday also had some other ideas making this redundant nowadays.

NB: I have used this "field/feature" years ago in Energy sector for grouping similar projects (but otherwise independent mostly internal projects) in terms of "technical areas" as well as "geograhical areas".

I came across this thread because my client has a header project which includes as sub project a Fixed Price Project and a T&M Project (for rechargeable expenses over and above what is billed in the Fixed Price Project).

What is odd is that even after marking the header project as such, you can create estimates against the header and the sub project. This is in D365 V8.1.

    Is this a bug?

My workaround to this is to make the header project of type COST, which will not create Estimates, but not ideal
