Handling item revisions in NAV

I work for a manufacturing company, and it is important to be able to track part numbers by revisions (new revisions are not interchangeable with previous revisions). Is there a way to track new revisions per item number in NAV without creating a new item card? I've looked into lot tracking, but it doesn't seem like you can block certain lot numbers. Also, are lot numbers specific to each item card? I have the same questions for variants and versions. It is important that we are able to ship and receive previous revision numbers, but we also want to be able to stop procurement from buying older revisions.

Thanks,

Hilary

What normally changes in the new revision for an item, are you asking about Assembly items ?

For a new revision on a part, it's normally a small design change. The previous revision still works, but it is no longer the best design.

If the new "revisions" would not be interchangeable with previous "revisions" then you should create a new Item with it's own Item Card. This will allow each "revision" to have it's own BOM (which may be different), have it's own Routing (which may be different), carry it's own inventory, allow you to ship & receive separately, and also allow you to block individually.

The key here is that you mentioned this altered item is not interchangeable. This identifies it as a new Item. Variants, Versions, and Item Tracking (such as Lot Numbers) won't suffice for the use case you are describing. Go with a new Item.

What problems you are facing if you create different variants?

Ideally new item will suffice your requirements

    hlumpkins10 ,

there is no option you have to create a new Item

and on your case of Item tracking

try possibility to use of  Item Tracking + Lot No both
