Item numbers more than 20 Characters

In the default og BC, we only have 20 Characters for intem number also in in Item referens number

Any idea how to get more Characters than 20, in anyway, as its seems extending Item number or Item ref. number, will mees up the defalults

Are their somewhere in the sysme a place to have more than 20 or and that can hold be extende to 50,

that can beused like/replacement for item number.

Hi

Changing length is possible with developpers, but it is huge work as many objects will need to be adjusted as well. I would not recommend that at all. Maybe you can workaround with description field. Or create a new field to handle that….

That would be my recommendation here

This is not possible. First: you cannot change a standard field. Second: No. is the primary key for the Item table.

You can create a custom new field (length = 50) and then use this field for your customer, but the Item table primary key must continue to be 20 characters.

On SaaS, you cannot modify standard fields. In a cloud environment, you're not alone :)

Anyone have any methods they have used to handle this situation? We have a GP client ready to migrate, but due to this issue

may look elsewhere.

There really is no solution to this. In BC SaaS you can not extend the primary key on the item table to a length of more than 20 characters. So if the customer requires longer item no. than 20 characters. Business Central is not the system for them.

Hi,

simple answer you can not change Item table, instead create a one more Field name can be "item No. 2" with 20 length, and take your data by breaking into two size, and store it accordingly and create a one more field in BC so that it merge and show of those two fields.

Not sure how I am right here. ;)

Hi,

Create One Custom filed as per the required Length. Use this field for reporting. Do not try to change the base field. It is not recommended

This is the way to go.
We solved it this way for a customer.

Created a custom field "PartNumber", Code[50] in this case. They use this field on all reports, searches, ...

The standerd "No." field is just a numeric field that is used as the PK.
