payment application versus payment entry

I've been wondering if I should use payment application or payment entry (AR module) to enter payment that has been paid via direct deposit. I think both work, but I just don't know which one is better. What are the pros and cons of using either of them?

Also if I use payment entry, shall I put auto apply payment on customer as default? Again, what is the pros and cons of using auto apply payment?

Any suggestion is appreciated.

    Hi,

    When using Payment Entry with Auto-apply, the system will apply any payment to the oldest open invoice, regardless of the amount.  (It does not try to match the amount of the payment to the amount of a certain open invoice.)

     When using Payment Application, you can select to which invoice(s) the payment should be applied.

    Another advantage of using Payment APP is that you only have one screen to use for things.  You always have to use payment app to apply credits or open payments, anyway.  I usually just remove access to the Payment Entry screen when I set up AR.
