Print Jobs redirecting to other printers

Posted on by 165

– When I’m logged into GP, my print jobs are randomly redirecting to various printers*.

Before I begin a routine in GP, I will double check that my printer is directed to either my local printer - Brother DCP-7065DN – or to the calj3acc printer if the job is over 30 pgs.**…but when I go to print, the print job will often be directed some other printer – often times one I’ve never used.  Frequently my Brother will just go “offline” in the middle of a print job regardless off the size of the print file.

Here’s all I can tell you:

*The redirection problem used to be just to printer named SUE, but last 4 weeks my printer has been redirected to … calj2csr, calj3acc, and Marilyn (this last one just started today)

**My local printer - “the Brother” - crashes if a report is larger than 30 pages, so if I know I’m going to print large reports, I’ll pre-select calj3acc. I don’t do this very often and always go back to the Brother when I’m done.

***The time of day, GP function or GP report or type doesn’t seem to make a difference.

****I have not had this problem printing from any other software (Word, Excel) while logged in through the GP.RDP link.

I will check on both of these and get back to you and Melissa, thank you for the reply and hope this will resolve the situation.

I would tend to agree with Melissa.  The issue most likely is an RDP thing.  There are a couple of things to check with  RDP.

    1. With the RDP connection window open click on Options, then Local Resources.  Make sure the Printers & Clipboard are checked.

    2. On the terminal server the printer may be missing drivers and so it shows "Offline" and selects another random printer.  If you have admin rights on the TS you might see if the drivers for that printer are installed..  I've seen this happen with Sharp printers back when we ran in a terminal services environment.

GP is installed via terminal service. none of the items printing utilize named printers. I am thinking it is the user setup which may be the issue and no one else has this problem of printers switching.

Looks as though you are logging in through RDP.  I think that is where I would start.  If you loose any connectivity to your printers after you have logged in to the RDP session, the session will not be able to find the printer you have selected.  I would start a discussion with whomever is responsible for the RDP server.

Is the GP install local to you or do you connect via Terminal Services / Citrix / or some other 3rd party method?  Do any of the items you are printing utilize named printers by chance?
