Hi All,

May I know how can I do data migration from Axapta 3 to AX2012? It especially for transaction data like On-hand balance, customer balance, open SO/PO? Any tutorial or brief explanation for this, so I can figure it out?

Thank you.

    Hi sanme98,

There is a data upgrade possible from AX4 or AX2009 to AX2012. As workaround you can first do a data upgrade to AX4 or AX2009 from AX3. This will do the upgrade with full historical details.

As there are a lot of new features compared to AX3 you can consider doing a "manual" conversion with setup, masterdata and opening balances. AX2012 has a Data Import/export framework (DIXF) where you can import the data. The source can be files or an ODBC connection to have AX3 as source. DIXF comes with a lot of standard supported entities like customers and journals. It is also possible to modify or add entities.

    Thanks André.

Just wanna check with you, is it possible to do full manual migration for transaction (Not go through AX4/2009)  since my customer got lot of customization and provided my team familiar with the relationship between tables in Axapta 3 and AX2012?

    Hi,

That will be depending on features you are using. At one customer we tried to simulate all historical transactions, but got stuck on currency revaluations. Sometimes they did a revaluation and afterwards posted new transactions in the old period. During simulation the order was based on dates. So we could not exactly simulate the real order of data entry. This customer was only using the finance part of AX.

Can you explain which details needs to be migrated with full historical data? Depending on the needs and details you can make a decision.

Sorry to step into other post , but this information required to me also.

In this case how did you handle the data up gradation  ?

When it comes to upgradation , generally what kind of data need to upgrade ?

Please share your experience .. as you had done many implementations.

    Thanks in advance.

On-hand balance, customer balance, open SO/PO - it is very easy to upload from AX 3.0 to 6.0 through DIXF, please create required staging in source system for flat data and you can enabled the package to import data in AX 6.0 but package should execute sequentially. Already i have done some customization for same requirement.

    Hi André,

I don't have the detail about this migration project yet, coz it just started to discuss & if this confirmed, this is first time I do such migration project  from old axapta (not re-implement).

The customer hope to keep all the transaction history, they don't use foreign currency revaluation, and their tax is quite simple.

    Thank you.

If you want complete history, you should upgrade your database, not just migrate some data.

I do agree with Martin. If the customer wants all history, then it is better to use the upgrade steps.

    To share some experiences:

At some customers they want to do an phased migration from AX4 to AX2012. Then it is not possible to use the upgrade script more than once. So upgrade all or you are lost. In this scenario I looked at data import/export framework and concluded it was too much for this tool to create many new entities which were missing at that time. Some others looked at the upgrade scripts and also said it was a no go to adjust them to support phased migrations. At the end they bought an add-on from to-increase and hired consultants to build the migrations. This was a lot of work for only the financial areas. Suppose you have also logistics, this would be a project setting up migrations for about one year or more.

So this is why I would suggest to use the standard scripts for full historical details. If the customer can live with opening balances in AX 2012 and have AX3 available for lookup some history the best would be using data import export framework. If some history needs to be migrated like ledger transactions, you can also use DIXF.

    Thanks Andre ,

Assume that client has 6 companies and 1 consolidation company ( total 7 companies) .. will go as you suggested just upload the opening balances , Open documents, master data, ..

Client using the old Ax version for 15 years and decided year wise balances, so we can upload the opening balances of 15 years in 6 companies using DIXF .

So my question how about the opening balances of consolidation company ?

What steps need to take to update the opening balances of consolidation company ?

How does it take the currency conversions/ penny differernces in consolidation company during opening balances ?

Could you please let me ?
