Dynamics GP Remote Access

I have a few users that need remote access to Dynamics GP.  I was going to use a VPN and laptops with GP to connect them, but I saw a few posts here that warned against it.  I can resort to using Remote Desktop (I already have a Windows 2003 Terminal Server with GP installed), but I would like to give them RDP shortcuts that automatically launch GP.  Using the Remote Desktop 'Programs' tab I entered the program path and name as: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\Dynamics.exe" Dynamics.set, but this gives me an error, "This launch file is invalid".  How can I get GP to launch automatically through Remote Desktop?  Thanks!

RDP isn't necessarily your problem. Can you go to the Terminal Server and try and launch GP? Rather than use the Icon on the Terminal Servers desktop, navigate to the GP application folder in windows explorer and drag the Dynamics.set file and drop it on the dynamics.exe file...to try and launch GP.

Do you get the same error message?

If so, there is a problem with your Dynamics.set file - either it has an incorrect number of products, or there is a path to a product dictionary that is invalid or cannot be accessed.

Find a workstation that works, and copy its dynamics.set file to your Terminal Server.

    let us know what happens.

GP launches just fine on the Terminal Server, whether you launch it from the shortcut or drag the Dynamics.set file to the .exe.  I think the error I am having is because the Dynamics.set argument is not being properly passed by the Remote Desktop client.  I have tried enclosing the entire path including the Dynamics.set argument in quotes (""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\Dynamics.exe" Dynamics.set") and this does not work either.

At the workstation, log into remoted desktop, navigate to the GP application folder and drop the dynamics.set file on the .exe file. Does GP launch?

    Yes it does.

Your program path is correct as  "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\Dynamics.exe" Dynamics.set

    1. Open the Icon Properties and click Target - does it go to the correct folder and find Dynamics.exe?
    2. Also check the Icon's security.
    3. Have you any product paths in your Dynamics.set file other than C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\ ? If you do, make a back up of your dynamics.set file and then replace these paths to point to the local C drive )i.e. replace them with C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\).

Thats all I can think of.....

Just saw your last post...some of the above isn't relevant. Its definately the icon. If you go through Start >> Programs >> Microsoft Dynamics >> GP...does it launch?

While I really appreciate your help, I believe you are a little off target.  The problem is passing arguments through the Remote Desktop client.  GP does, and always has, worked just fine on my Terminal Server.  The only thing I am trying to do differently now is to launch it upon login using the 'Start the following program on connection' option in the Remote Desktop client.  I have a few users that only need GP, and I don't want them to have access to other software on the Terminal Server.  Using the 'Start the following program' option should launch GP upon login, and log them off when GP is closed, keeping them out of the other software.

Aha!...yes, way off target...understand now. I'll take a look soonest.

Under "Documents and Settings\{user name}\desktop"  you could delete all but the GP icon.

They would still get any icons that are in the "Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu" and "Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop" folders.

I am still interested in getting this working if anyone else can shed some light on the subject.  Thanks!
