Hi,

I am using Visual Source Safe 2005 to fetch 3rd party products, am getting the following error "Insufficient access privileges to perform this vcs provider operation."

i checked it in Visual KB but i didn't get any soultions,

1. I don't have any special characters in my project name.

2. full rights is granted on the VSS folder.

3. user is added as administrator.

The VSS was working fine earlier and i was also able to fetch,

one of the project was not restored properly, so what i did was i deleted the project and restored again. from then onwards am not able to fetch the product.

can any one of you please let me know if i am missing anything.

Thanks in advance

Santosh G

Going back to the initial question, I too had this error  :  "Insufficient access privileges to perform this vcs provider operation."

My Dexterity source control was setup on Team Foundation Server 2013.

So I began searching for some help on my error but the solution above to reinstall VSS was not an option in my case.

Then I have found my own solution that I am about to "self answer" (sorry about that :-) )

The solution was that some of my files in that project were set as "read-only". I have unchecked them from read-only then it worked !

Hope it can help other people !

    Frank,

I too felt the same as you when I saw four verified answers by Santosh himself in succession but when I found the time gap between the dates the questions posted and they are verified, I felt that he would have found his questions unanswered and worked out a solution for himself and verified it to help other members with same issue.

I don't see you overreacted on this as I have seen some posts either self verified intentionally or marking as 'Suggested' for simple replies like "Thank you" or "I too agree with  Frank's answer" etc.,

Also I see some 'correct' answers will NOT be verified by the person posted (not intentionally though) and would like to see those posts verified by the top contributors like you and Leslie which will certainly help the other members.

Thank you Leslie for your response and your kind words.  I'm sure I overreacted to what I perceived the situation being something other than what it was.  Honestly, I personally don't track how many verifications I get on the forum.  However I believe some do and just wanted to make sure it's fair for everyone.  Plus, I've never seen so many questions asked and answered in succession before, so my antennae went up.

I apologize again Santosh, mea culpa.

Leslie, are you at Convergence this week?

    Gosh Frank,

I guess I'm going to have to disagree. Personally, if the question is answered, I like that the answer is posted here to help us all. Also, if the question remained unanswered - others who wanted to try and answer it are wasting their time each time they read it.

For me, this forum is the best place to find answers - or at least links to answers. Though I prefer the answer be typed in because links are so often bad for older questions. I get frustrated sometimes when I see the exact question that I have as a 'question', but there is no answer. If someone works out their own problem, I want to see the answer.

I understand your point about 'forum numbers' and I see that there were four or five questions in a row that were 'asked and answered', I see what prompted your suspicions. Sometimes it's easy to spot. Still, I wouldn't want to discourage the forum at large from posting answers to their own questions.

I have done it myself, and certainly didn't have forum stats in mind. Seems like whenever I finally reach out for help, the next thing that happens is that I find the answer. Something about putting the question 'out there' opens up my mind to find answers. Hmmm, perhaps I should ask sooner - but then I would reveal what a bone-head I can be :)

I would be really embarrassed if you called me down on where I may have answered my own question. Kind of makes me afraid to ask - certainly afraid to post an answer.  How about this, if we answer our own question, we just don't 'verify' it. Instead, start the Reply with "Answered it!" or something like that.  I want folks to still post answers to their own questions, but if it's not 'verified' then they couldn't be accused of stacking the deck.

If there are any prizes for forum answers, you have most certainly already won it! I agree with Santosh - we need your guidance and appreciate how much time you spend helping the community in general. Keep up the good work my friend.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

I apologize if I may have offended you Santosh.  That was not my intent.  Perhaps it would be best for you to create a blog and post your solutions there.  This really is not the correct venue for asking and answering a question for the sake of informing other forum members.

If anyone disagrees with me, please let me know.

    Thank you.

Thanks Frank, for your reply, the solution actually worked for me, increasing the count of verified answer was not my intention.

Santosh, asking a question and then answering it yourself to increase your verified answer count, if that's what you're doing, isn't cool, nor is it honest.
