What's the logic of consumption in Business central

Hello,

We are batch manufacturing company and we are using Business Central. Previously on NAV.

May I know the consumption logic in Business central?

Previously we are doing consumption manually by paper recording and we did the data entry after the production was done. (There is delay and gap on the time we have the data and enter the data to system)

My stakeholders is asking to have the backlash consumption. Pick the quantity round up to Packaging UOM. Is the system possible to get the consumption quantity by deducting  leftover quantity?  Consumption Quantity = Pick quantity - leftover quantity?) Is Business central able to work on this logic?

Thank you!

To add to Shauna's response, you can trigger the backflush earlier by using Routing Link Codes to associate the Bill of Material Components to specific Routing Operations.  By using Routing Link Codes, the associated material will be backflushed (consumed) at the time Output is Posted for the Operation.  This way you don't have to wait until the Production Order is moved to Finished Status for the backflush to happen.

Backflushing of material is inventory dependent.  This means it can't backflush the components if you don't have it available in inventory.  In the case of Pick for Production, if you haven't Picked and moved the inventory to the Prod-In Bin, the system will not have inventory available to backflush (consume).  In regard to your question above, you don't really need to worry about the non-Picked quantity ("leftover quantity"), as it won't be consumed if it isn't available in the Prod-In Bin.  This really shouldn't occur since your backflush quantity is based on your Output Quantity.

As Shauna mentioned, the system won't suggest Picks based on a Packing UOM for a Parent Item, so you need to setup your Parent Item's Planning Parameters to relate to the Packaging UOM.  This way your BOM will follow the same requirements.  The Order Multiple is generally the easiest way to accomplish this goal, so your production quantity is divisible by your normal packaged quantity.

    Hope this helps!

P.S. When you see a reply that solves your question, please help other forum users by marking it as a solution.

    Hi,

The consumption is calculated based on the production BOM setup against the finished item.  Take this straightforward example below.

In order to make 1 of SP-BOM200 we need 4 components with the quantity above.

If you create a production to make 10 of the finished item then the components are hence multiplied by 10 also.

You can set the flushing method to backward and that means that the component quantity will be reduced when the production order is changed from released to finished.  The quantity consumed is on a pro-rata basis so if only 8 items are produced then the components consumed will relate to the 8 and leave the remaining as unused.

You can setup your production order to pick the quantity required but I don't believe there is any way to round that up to the packaging UOM without some development but not sure if that has fully answered your question.

There are other ways to consume and they should be explained in the below.

    Hope that helps,
    Shauna
