I need to display a line of text inside a tab on the top #

business process flow - I don't think you can do it (well, you can always use unsupported customizations and access underlying HTML DOM model directly of course)
For the tabs, you can add a web resource (1 line, no borders, no scrolling), and display an HTML web resource in that iframe. Then, just put your message into that web resource.
