If you take an item from the Item Ledger Entry which has a BOM and is therefore made up of other components and sub assemblys, how do you effectively track which parts and serial numbers were consumed as part of the Item output?

If you are trying to know which Serialized Component made it into which (hopefully Serialized) Finished Good, this can be difficult in base Business Central.  There is an Extension available from Insight Works, which through scanning can record this information.

In the past (using Assembly Orders) we customized a process for scanning the Finished Good, then scanning the Serialized Components being added.  In other environments (manufacturing), the user had to select the component serial at the time of recording the finished good serial to establish the relationship.  In yet another environment, the finished good was given the same serial number as the component that went into it.

It will really depend on your process, when the data is recorded, and how much is known about the final finished good identification.  You'll likely have to add an extension to store the component/finished good relationship.  It would be a good idea to discuss this business need with your partner to get their recommendation on how BC can be utilized to solve the need.
