Good day,

'The record in table Item Unit of Measure already exists. Identification fields and values: Item No.='KT32717',Code='EA''

The user is creating an item, why would it say it exists already. Our support team just renamed the item, the message is coming up with a couple of other items.

Regards
Rosemary

You will encounter this error if the Unit of measure already exists and you attempt to create a duplicate. If you are encountering this error during item creation, then there must be some customization causing this issue. When you encounter the error, copy the trace and send it to your development team for resolution.

    Good day,

Thanks for you prompt response, question, the unit of measure will exist yes. Our retail department will sell items as 'each', so, in the creation of a new item is it mandatory to input 'each' as a unit of measure?

    Regards

are you renaming or creating new item? how do you create new item? do you create it manually?

when you fill in the base unit of measure, it will automatically create item unit of measure.

It means that for that item number, the “EA” unit of measure is already in the Item Unit of Measure table.
When your team renamed the item, the related unit of measure record likely stayed the same, so now creating it again causes a duplicate error.

    Fix:
Go to Item → Related → Units of Measure and either delete the existing “EA” line or use it instead of creating a new one.

    Hi Rosemary,

How you are creating the item?
If you are creating Manually then just select the UOM  if UOM in not defined in Unit of measure table. Because item table and Unit of measure table are different.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When creating an item, create related records in other tables, such as:
    • Item Unit of Measure (table 5404) — which links a Unit of Measure (like 'EA' for Each) to an item.
If the item is being created manually, via import (e.g., Excel/Configuration Package, template), or via API, and the UoM record already exists (perhaps from a previous failed attempt, import retry, or template default), then trying to add it again causes this error.
    How to resolve it:
Here are steps to investigate and fix it:
    1. Check if the item already exists
Go to Items and search for Item No. KT32717. If the item already exists, then:
    • Open it
    • Go to Related > Item > Units of Measure
    • Confirm whether EA already exists there
If it does, then you don’t need to create that UoM again.
    2. Check the UoM setup in your process
Depending on how the item is being created:
    • If using Excel/Configuration Package: Check the Item Unit of Measure table in the package. If it has a record for KT32717 and EA, and it already exists in BC, remove it from the import.
    • If using an item template: The template might be trying to create EA again. Review the template's default UoM setup.
    • If creating via AL code or API: Ensure you're not trying to insert the same UoM twice. Wrap insert statements in checks like IF NOT EXISTS.
    3. Fix or delete duplicate records (if partially created)
If the item creation failed previously and left behind the UoM entry, you can:
    • Navigate to Item Units of Measure
    • Filter by Item No. = KT32717 and Code = EA
    • If it’s there, it confirms the duplicate
    You can either:
    • Leave it as is and avoid re-inserting it, or
Delete the UoM line manually (only if you are sure it UOM is not using in another item card)

Hope this will be help you to short out the issues. If not please share the details steps with screenshot so that anyone can understand the exact issues.

    Thanks,
    PRao

This should be a problem caused by customization. I tried to rename the item in the standard environment, and this error did not occur.
Please ask the developers to debug this.

    Thanks

    Hello,

Does the error occur when you have a new item? Does the product have any movements? I would recommend checking if there are any developments associated with the items.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

This case the error usually points to a code issue. If your support team recently did a rename through customization or process logic, it may not be updating the related Item Unit of Measure table correctly. That means when the item is being created, the code is trying to insert a UoM record (EA) that already exists.

You’ll need to review the custom code or process that handles item renaming/creation and make sure it checks for existing UoM records before inserting.

    Good day,

Thanks for all the responses, it has helped me in understanding the error and what caused it. The partner indicated that there was an issue with the migration of the items.

The issue comes up intermittently, a configuration package was created to be used in the case of multiple items.

    Thanks for the assistance.

    Regards
    Rosemary
