Predict the availability of a semi-finished before its production order has started

Posted on by 5

Hi everyone,

We are a manufacturing company, and we use BC for our production planning. We have a problem with the MRP and avaialbilty by event in general. Let me give an example.

Assume we need to manufacture 10,000 pieces of item A, and we need this production for the second half of this year, so we are planning well in advance.

To make every item A we need one semi-finished item B, and we don't have stock of item B at all.

Also, item B is a production item too and so we need to manufacture it to build the stock needed to satisfy the work order of item A. Item A and B are manufactured on two different lines, so they can be manufactured both at the same time.

Manufacturing item B needs 10 days, with a daily output of 1,000 pieces per day. Instead, to manufacture item A, we need only 5 days, with a daily output of 2,000 pieces per day.

So, in theory, we want to plan to start manufacturing item A, before we complete the workorder of item B as its availability will grow of 1,000 pieces per day, and since we need 2,000 B per day to manufacture item A, after a few days we should have a buffer generous enough to cover the production of item A, while in the meantime item B continues its production.

This will work in real life, and that's what we do, but we haven't found a way yet to make BC considering that we will have availability of item B before its work order will be completed. So, if you manually plan a workorder for item A on a date before the end-date of the workorder of item B, you will see a negative availability, and this is a bad thing for the MRP that will start making funny proposals to fix the negative as it won't consider that there will be stock of item B before the end of its workorder.

So, in short, is there a way to get BC considering that the availability of a manufacturing item will increase gradually during its production cycle and will not just appear all in one go only once the work order is completed?

It's not an easy topic to describe. I tried my best and I hope it's clear enough. If not, please do not hesitate to ask for more info.

Thank you!
