    Hello,

D365 Project Operations and the Project Management and Accounting module in D365 Finance & Operations (F&O) serve different purposes, even though they both focus on project-based business processes. Here’s a breakdown of their key differences:

    1. D365 Project Operations

    • A standalone application designed primarily for project-based service organizations.

    • It integrates sales, project management, resource management, and financials into one solution.

    • Built on Dataverse and Power Platform, making it more flexible for front-office operations.

    • Ideal for organizations that need advanced project sales and delivery capabilities (e.g., professional services, consulting firms).

    •

    2. Project Management and Accounting Module in D365 F&O

    • A module within D365 Finance & Operations that focuses on financial and accounting aspects of project management.

    • It supports project budgeting, cost tracking, revenue recognition, and invoicing.

    • Primarily used by companies needing enterprise-wide financial control over projects (e.g., construction, manufacturing, internal IT projects).

    • More ERP-driven, tightly integrated with financial modules like General Ledger, Accounts Payable/Receivable, and Fixed Assets.

    •

    Licensing Requirements

If you want to use the Project Management and Accounting module in D365 F&O, you need a D365 Finance or D365 Supply Chain Management license. These licenses typically grant access to all finance-related modules, including project management.

Let me know if you need further clarification! 😊

    Hello,

regarding licenses. We have lots of "Project Accountants", the have the following licenses:

    Activity
    Operations
    Project
    Server
    Team Members

    They do the following tasks:

    • Checking and posting timesheets
    • Creating Intercompany customer invoices & project invoces
    • Checking and posted expenses
Therefore, you dont need Finance or a Supply chain license for them. However, if you the accountants are also doing project accounting, then of course they need a finance license.

    Kind regards, Adis

Project Operations is not a D365 F&O module.  It resides as a companion app in Dynamics CE and is for managing sales, resources, and other aspects of a project.  Dynamics 365 Project Operations | Microsoft Learn

Project Management & Accounting IS a module inside F&O and is used to track revenue and expenses associated with various types of projects.  No licensing beyond standard F&O license is required to use this module.
