GP10SP5. How to do “build your own” style kits?

Posted on by 1,855

Hello, we have a website and we want to start doing “build your own” style items.  Like what you see when you’re on a site that sells computers and you select from several choices on ram size, hard drive size, operating system installed, etc.   GP10 only has predetermined kits, that is the kit is already created and you sell the pre-configured kit.  Is it possible to do “build your own” style kits in GP10?  The customer is purchasing a single sku but that sku is composed of other skus so it’s like a kit.  Does not have to be a kit.  Any suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks.

I have seen a similar case with less complication in a burger restaurant, in which sales are processed on ALOHA point of sale. The customer simply build their own choices of the component items of their burgers, either single, double or triple meat, onion, cheese ...etc. The choices to make a final product are limited yet too many. The choice was either to create all the possible combinations of component items so that sales can be smoothly integrated into Dynamics GP where all the required KITS are predefined.

The other choice was to build up an integration "staging" area in which (for each final product sold on the POS level) we would look whether an existing KIT is defined on Dynamics GP level or not based on the components. If not, then a new kit item record will be created called "Burger-000XX" and a KIT is defined as well. Then, the sales invoices are migrated after the master files have been created.

Proposed eConnect schema to handle the master items phase are:

    •  <taUpdateCreateITemRcd> in order to create an item on the item maintenance window with a "kit" item type
    • <taCreateKitItemRcd> in order to create the associated kit definition for the item defined above, along with the required components

In case the choices are limited, I would simply create all the possible KITS initially to ensure that integrated sales invoices/ orders will have no issues. Otherwise, you might need to build up an intelligent integration layer to handle and fulfill your requirement

Never hesitate to share any further inquiries,

Nope.  Nothing else in GP will handle this.  You could configure outside of GP and then import to an existing Kit item but that means setting every possible configuration up as a kit.

Thanks Frank for answering, but we don’t own MFG and we don’t really want the overhead. We don’t do manufacturing.  We sell gift baskets and we want customers to build their own gift basket.  So they select their choice of jams, then their choice of chocolates, choice of tea, etc.  There are six build your own selections and each selection has about 5 or 6 options to choose from. And we don’t know what choices the customers will make ahead of time.  I was hoping there would be a easy way to do this without going the mfg route.  Any other suggestions?

Joe, the module I think you're looking for is called 'Sales Configurator' and is part of the Manufacturing Suite in GP.  Sales Configurator does exactly what you're talking about and leverages the 'Configuration Bill of Material', also part of the Manufacturing Suite.
