Onprem BC25 Modern Search

Has anyone seen an issue with modern search where it does not return any results unless a wildcard is applied before and after the search term.  For instance in customers I want to find acme company.  If I put *acme* it works, if I put in acme and try to use modern search, no results are found?

The sql full text feature is installed and shows enabled on the bc database.

    Hi, good day
I hope this can help you, and give you some hints.

Fine-tune the search by using filter criteria (legacy search only)

    Hello,

Yes, this is a known behavior with Modern Search in Dynamics 365 Business Central when SQL Full-Text Search is enabled. Full-Text Search does not support partial or infix matching by default, which means searching for a term like "acme" will not return results unless it exactly matches a token stored in the index. To get results for partial matches, users need to use wildcards such as acme.

This happens because full-text indexing breaks text into individual words or tokens and searches only those, without automatically considering substrings within them. Even though the SQL Full-Text feature may be installed and enabled, it requires the correct configuration and indexing to work effectively. It's recommended to ensure that the Full-Text Search index is properly set up and populated, and users should be made aware of using wildcards when searching for partial matches.

    Regards,
    Mansi Soni

This happens because Business Central’s modern search uses SQL Full-Text Search, which by default requires wildcards (*) around the term for partial matches. Without wildcards, it looks for exact matches only.

    To fix this, you can:

Always use wildcards around your search terms, or

Customize the search setup or filters, but that requires deeper changes.

    Hi Ramesh,

To test what your saying I typed in the entire company name, both matching case and all lowercase and the search result returned nothing.  The feature itself seems to not be working, no events in the server logs or anything either.

I would say no. Modern search has some limitations but I would below can help you. When you type "acme", BC interprets it as “exact match starts with 'acme'” (not contains). But when you type "acme", you’re forcing a contains-style wildcard search, which works — but it's not the native behavior for Modern Search.

    Thanks
    Ramesh
