Deploy power bi report to on-premise environment

(3) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 521
I created cubes on dev machine and accessed them from AxDW and built my report...

Now I want to deploy it on production environment (on-premise), what steps should I do?

First deploy a package from dev to production so the cubes appear in entity store?
Then publish the report?

I know the steps on Cloud environments.. but in on-premise I can't find a steps for the whole process!

To deploy a Power BI report that uses Entity Store (AxDW) from a development environment to a production on-premise environment in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (D365FO), follow the steps below.

✅ Solution: Deploy Power BI Report to On-Premise Environment

    1. Deploy Analytical Model (Cubes) to Production

To ensure that your cubes are available in the Entity Store on the production server:
    • Step 1.1: Export the model/package from DEV (containing your aggregate measurements and perspectives).
    • Step 1.2: Import and deploy the model/package into the PROD environment using LCS or deployable package tools.
    • Step 1.3: Go to System administration > Setup > Entity Store in PROD and refresh the corresponding aggregate measurements.
      • Ensure the cubes are processed successfully.
      • You may set up a batch job to keep them refreshed.

    2. Validate AxDW Database on PROD SQL Server

    • Verify that the AxDW database exists and is populated with your cube data.
    • Confirm SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) is accessible and hosts the deployed model if using live connections.

    3. Configure On-Premises Data Gateway (for Power BI access)

If the Power BI report will be published to PowerBI.com (even in on-premise environments), install and configure a Data Gateway:
    • Download from: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/gateway/
    • Install it on a server that can access the PROD AxDW database.
    • Configure the data source in Power BI Service to connect to AxDW using the correct credentials.
💡 This is necessary because Power BI cannot directly access on-premise SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) or AxDW without a data gateway.

    4. Publish Power BI Report

    Depending on your deployment target:

Option A: Publish to Power BI Service

    • Open the .pbix file in Power BI Desktop.
    • Update the data source connection string to point to PROD AxDW.
    • Save and publish to Power BI Service.
    • In Power BI Service:
      • Set up a refresh schedule using the configured Data Gateway.

Option B: Embed in D365FO (Report Catalog Integration)

To embed the report in D365FO for user access:
    • Save the report in your Azure blob storage or a local share if configured.
    • In System administration > Setup > Power BI reports, register your report.
    • Ensure the report’s embed configuration matches your user roles and security model.

    ✅ Summary of Required Steps

    Step Task
1 Deploy the analytical model (cubes) to production using a deployable package
2 Refresh aggregate measurements in Entity Store
3 Validate access to AxDW and/or SSAS on PROD
4 Install and configure Power BI Gateway (if publishing to cloud)
5 Update and publish the .pbix report to Power BI Service or embed in D365FO

Let me know if you want steps for embedding the report directly inside D365FO workspace tiles or for SSAS live connection instead of import mode
