Automatic Nightly Inventory Reconcile with macro Windows Server 2008

I have a 2003 server that runs a scheduled task to launch the shortcuts that contain macro files.  The macros are running a nightly inventory reconcile.  These have been running nightly for a long time.  We are now planning to retire this server.

My understanding is 2008 windows server is not able to run with the desktop interactively? So that the macro files will essentially not run and leaving me short on sleep?

Child of the1980's posted June 12 2009...on a post titled "windows server 2008/vista cannot run GP macros automatically"

"A couple of weeks back, I had mentioned that I was having trouble running a GP macro automatically in Windows Server 2008 Task Scheduler. After working at great length with Microsoft tech support, I found out why.

The Windows Task Scheduler in Windows Server 2008 and Vista will simply not run a GP macro automatically. This is because the Task Scheduler cannot be configured to interact with the desktop.

Scheduled Tasks in Windows Server 2003 and XP, however, do allow GP macros to be scheduled to run automatically.

I just thought that I would share this info with you all, and I hope that Windows Server 2003 and XP do not go away any time in the near future.

LOL!!!

Hypothetically, if everyone were to upgrade to 2008 and Vista, automating the scheduling of GP macros frankly could not be done.

I had successfully created a macro that launches GP, logs in as a user, performs Inventory Reconcile, and closed out of GP. This macro can only be scheduled to run in either Windows Server 2003 and XP.

Has anyone found a way around this?

There is an ISV or 3rd party with a tool to purchase.  Maybe that is an alternative.  It is mc2 link below...

Well, I have found a workaround, but not an ideal one.

Instead of having task scheduler launch the shortcuts that launch the macro, make new batch files instead.  Have the task scheduler launch the batch file that points to the .mac file.  Then have a user that is always logged in with a console session on the server.  Not really ideal, but gets the job done.

Here is what I have in my batch file...

    echo %USERNAME% %DATE%%TIME% >> "C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\Macros\macro.log"

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\Dynamics.exe"

    Dynamics.set

    "C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\inv rec.mac"

    echo %errorlevel% >> "C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\macro.log"

    Hope this helps.....
