Run Workstation Software without Mapped Drive

Hello,

It strikes me as very odd that I have to map a drive to the server folder that contains all of the server side executable and DLL's.  This is actually a gigantic security risk - if the users account is compromised then that account can be used to replace DLL/EXE files with malicious versions.

Does anyone know of a method to install the client software on an end users desktop and have them connect to the server through SL without needing the mapped drive?  That would turn SL into a standard client/server based application.

Thanks,

Matt

In fact there are 3 main flavors for installing SL:

    1. As a remote virtual application. You can set this with Windows Server through RDP. The end user gets a Dynamics SL icon. When the icon is double clicked the Dynamics SL app is launched. But underneath what really happens is that a RDP session is established.
    2. As a local windows application. You just install the SL application in each PC, using the setup media. The application resides 100% in the end user computer.
    3. As a workstation install. You install SL application in a main server and setup a shared folder. The end user gets the installation from the shared drive.

I think the alternative 2 is what you are looking for. There is no obligation to use the workstation install. Each alternative has it pros and cons. The virtual application works wonders for me, since I have 2 dozens of remote construction sites, but it might be a problem if the users are used to work with their local disks. The local install should be the best performance oriented if you have a 100% LAN environment, but over time gets hard to maintain, since you have to manually enforce each setup has the same versions installed. There are some licensing differences on secondary software (like Office and Windows CAL), but in my opinion they are marginal.

What Erich said, but the default install of the later SL versions sets the permissions on the shared folders to read and execute, so your worry is minimal on installing malicious .exes.
