Gaps in the JRNENTRY sequence for GL20000 & GL30000

Under what circumstances might you get gaps in the JRNENTRY number sequence for the GL20000 & GL30000 tables?

After unsticking a batch using KB#850289 (batch ran fine afterwards), my accounting people noticed a gap in the sequence of Journal Entry numbers. I went back and there are other gaps in the GL tables. My accountants want a explanation as to why that happens.

In addition, if this a real audit concern, there is the Audit Trails Module.   Expensive but does have the ability to track these types of things.

All the situations that Richard describes in his answer are what I would consider valid reasons for gaps in the numbers.  However, the worst case scenario (and the typical reason that I get asked this question) is that someone inadvertently deleted GL transactions.  The cause for this, as well as a way to prevent it in the future, is described in this blog post: victoriayudin.com/.../where-did-my-transaction-go.

A simple way is that you enter two GL batches. You decide to delete the first batch and post the second. Since the J/E numbers were assigned while you were entering the batch, now you have a gap. You could also post a subledger to the GL and delete that batch. While you are entering a batch you decide to skip J/E numbers. You change the next J/E number and then start entering additional transactions. These are just a few. I am sure there are other reasons why gaps appear.
