Hi,

Can anyone provide me any MS documentation that specifically marks the boundaries between configuration and customizations in AX 2012?

Regards,

Saurabh Singh

Please elaborate your question in more details, it is unclear what you want.

In my interpretation of your query a Configuration is when you change a setup through the AX Client User Interface, and a Customization is when you change the metadata or code through the AX Development client.

    Hi,

You want to configure the legal entity or configuring ax?

    Thanks

    Hi Saurabh,

Configuration is everything you can setup to have the system work in the way you want. E.g. workflows can be configured to have a certain approval route. Customizations are changes in the application itself to fulfill certain requirements which is not possible out of the box; even not with setup or configurations.

As far as I'm aware, there is no specific documentation explaining this difference.

You got it right. I have the same understanding of configuration & customization. But my client wants if I can support this assertion with any documentation provided by Microsoft.

Configuring your system components allows them to work within a given environment, which includes language, currencies, time zones, and more. Customization, on the other hand, operates specifically to suit the needs of your business.

I do not think you would find such a document, since it is just simply common sense.

If you want to give anything for your customer anyway, then Customization would probably be anything which falls under this section of the MSDN documentation:

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh881815.aspx

Configuration would be anything which does not classify as modifications to the system via the AX Application Object Tree (AOT) or any other means explained in the documentation above, and the changes done through the User Interface (be it client or web like Enterprise Portal) modifies the application behavior.
