Navision login, Cannot start service from the command line or a debugger.

Dear Community,
we have a Navision login problem.
We set up a new Server with Windows Server 2012 and Navision. But we can't start Navision from a new user exempt the user "Administrator".
In our Microsoft Server 2012 System, there are two users ("Administrator" and "Student"). They are in the same groups, etc.
If we log in via Remotedesktop, Navision won't start from User "Student".

The notification is: "Cannot start service from the command line or a debugger. A Windows Service must first be installed (using installutil.exe) and then started with the ServerExplorer, Windows Services Administrative tool or the NET START command."

Can you tell use the name of this service? Are there any settings we have to set?

We hope to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Julian Eßlinger

    Hi

The service error is a strange one so this may not fix the issue but is worth a try as a first step

I have found the following with NAV on a terminal server in the past, the issue is that when running on a new user the NAV software may one to update files that are read only by the user, these were in the NAV Client folder in program files (In the one example, the other time was a restriction on user files)

As a first step open the terminal session as the user, then hold down shift and right click on the NAV icon on the desktop, choose run as different user and type in the Admin credentials

This will allow the software to run with all the edit permissions it needs for the first run,

In order to prevent this going forwards we changed the permissions on the NAV install folder to give users modify permissions on that folder which fixed it going forwards for new users

Let me know if this resolves the issue

    Hi,

    Thanks for your idea.

I've tried it, but unfortunately it doesn't work. I had changed every permission in the folder and also choose to run as Admin. The same problem as before.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Julian

    Hmm,

Ok, if it wont run on the user account even under the admin logon there must be an issue with the installation across the accounts

Perform a full uninstall from the control panel of NAV

Restart the server to make sure the system has cleared away any left over bits

Do the new installation in terminal server install mode:

Go to the control panel and run an icon called

    "Install Application on Terminal Server"

Follow the prompts to have the system install across all users correctly, this should ensure that there wont be differences between installation for the different users
