It's a potentially huge topic and how exactly you should restore your databases depends predominantly on how you do backups. Very detailed documentation can be found in Back Up and Restore of SQL Server Databases.

For a few AX-specific points, consult Plan backup and recovery [AX 2012].

Is there any simple script to enter in the cmd and just run the backup, like the way we do for compiling the AX?

    Hi D_Meethu R,

You can use any script for SQL backup and restore for example blog.sqlauthority.com/.../sql-server-restore-database-backup-using-sql-script-t-sql

But keep in mind that there are 2 data bases: Business data DB and model store. One contains all business data and another all code and metadata.

Also if you are talking about restore DB from one environment to another e.g. from prod to test it's a huge topic as Martin mentioned.

There is no single way to restore a backup, because there are several different types of backups (e.g. differential backups), different ways of restoring (e.g. point-in-time recovery), parameters you want to use (such as replacing a database with a different name) and so on.

Please don't try to restore a backup unless you understand what kind of backup it is and how you want to restore it.

    Martin,

If it is a simple backup, like you are asked to do the backup of the previous night or they say to restore the backup on Friday's file; then?

I don't know your definition of "simple backup", therefore please tell us:

    1. What kind of AX environment is it? (Dev, Production or so.)
    2. Which databases are involved? (AX data, modelstore, SharePoint, analysis services...)
    3. What's the recovery model of all databases that you're going to restore (connect to the database server in SSMS and check Properties > Options > Recovery model of each applicable database).
    4. How exactly did you make the backup?
    5. Are you using any kind of high-availability configuration?

I don't thing this is going to help, because your blog post is actually about a different topic. It basically shows how not to restore some tables, suggesting that you're doing a data migration from another environment and not a restore of an environment.

By the way, you can now simply use the Test Data Transfer Tool to skip certain tables. But again, that's not a restore.
