In answering this question there are two parts - one technical and one best practices

Technical Answer - Yes - GP 10 will run on SQL 2008 R2 and I am pretty sure that there are many consultants in the same boat I am - you build the current Server and still support back to a prior version.  I have GP10, GP2010, GP2013, 2013R2 and GP2015 all running on SQL2008 R2, SQL2012 and SQL2014

Best Practice Answer - Always refer to the System and OS requirements provided by the developer of the software and ensure that you are running at the very least the stated recommendation for the various elements of the software environment.

I just looked up the system requirements for Dynamics GP 10.0 when preparing an upgrade proposal. GP 10.0 only supports SQL 2008 R2 when patched to SP5.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 - Standard, Workgroup or Express Editions - NOTE: Service Pack 5 or later for Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 required. Click on the link below to download GP 10.0 Server Pack 5:

Excately what I was referring to - there are the Technical and the Best Practice answers.

Harry, thanks for the clarification on the Best Practice answer.

It does not change that one can in limited cases still run GP10 on a higher version of SQL - I do not do so in  a production environment, but on a short term basis, I might consider if I am planning and building the migration to a new server.

    Bill -

I am with you all the way. There is a far cry between Best Practice and what's possible. When I need to get an older version of Dynamics GP running, I do my best to set it up to conform to the System Requirements for the version.

This can be difficult, but absolutely critical when a customer's maintenance is lapsed, and they only have access to an older version of Dynamics GP, say 7.0 on Btrieve.

I have a post in the Rants section of my blog about this very subject. In my opinion, when Dynamics GP is being used to do business on a day-to-day basis, options go from what's possible to what's Best Practice.

I work with nlo and the question we are asking is.

Can we bring are SQL (SQL 2008R2) current with all SP’s and CU’s which is SP3 that was released on 9/26/2014?

The link below was last updated December 2013.

The last update or hotfix was April 2012

If you look over what Harry posted in the prior notes, you should see that he notes that SQL2008 R2 - is supported - I don't want to comment on the specifics of what is in an specific SP related to SQL, but unless there is a major change in the operation of the software, I don't see why the most curent patch to SQL would make a difference.

Remember GP10 was created before the patch and so they can not state the future, they will tell you over and over that you must meet the minimum platform.

    Hope this helps.

Based on your SQL build you are essentially at SQL 2008R2 RTM with the MS11-049 security update installed.  I've tested GP 10 with SQL 2008R2 SP2 and I didn't have any problems.  SP3 is a rollup of all the CU since the previous service pack was released.

Here is a link to the release details of SQL 2008R2 SP3 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2979597

Here is a link to the release details of every CU since SP2 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2730301

Now every environment is different and while the core functionality of GP10 may work with SQL 2008R2 SP3 you will also want to reach out to any 3rd party product vendors to ensure they support that version of SQL.  Then as always test test test...  Rolling back a SQL service pack is very painful and you'd be better off building a new SQL server because of the amount of time involved and no garuntee that every aspect of the service pack will be removed especially with shared components such as SSIS / BIDS / SSMS.

Another side note is that since it's a version change I don't think you would be able to restore any of your backups if you find your self two weeks into the upgraded SQL and needing to roll back since the versions are different.

Thanks Jonathan for you're answer. I have been reading on all the SQL CU’s and SP for 2008r2 for the past month and read that SP3 was just all the CU’s for SP2. I was more or less trying to see if anyone had a similar environment to mine that has SP3 installed. My goal is to bring my current environment OS, GP and SQL up to date.

Thanks Bill and Harry for addressing this question.

For each version of Dynamics GP there is a System Requirements guide that we want to refer to before setting up any type of server or workstation environment or SQL Server instance to make sure what you're going to do is compatible and supported.

As for SQL Server service packs and hotfixes, other than where the System Requirements guide specifically mentions a SQL service pack, Dynamics GP normally doesn't have any issues, nor is affected by higher service packs or hotfixes applied for SQL.

Also, while you may be able to get environments to work, such as Dynamics GP 10.0 pre-SP5 to work on SQL Server 2008 R2, for example, it still doesn't make it a supported environment, so we don't recommend doing it.

Make sure your Windows OS and SQL Server versions/builds are listed in the System Requirements documentation for your version/build of Dynamics GP to make sure you're actually supported, as the last thing you want to find out is that you're on a non-supported environment and you won't receive technical support, when you're running into an error or issue while trying to do some process within the application.

There is also System Requirement guide for the Dynamics GP web applications such as Business Portal and Dynamics GP Workflow, as well as for Web Client, if using Dynamics GP 2013 and GP 2015.

    Thank you
