How do the documents reach the endpoint when using AIF?

Hey guys

Assume I have an AIF outbound service, like the Sales Order Confirmation, or the Packing slip, etc.

I configure my outbound port (I use MSMQ or File System Adapter), add the service, Activate, and generate the document from the application.

As a result, I get the XML with the document generated and placed in the queue / folder.

What happens then? How do I configure where exactly to send the document, and what does the actual sending?

Thanks

    Hi Ivan,

If you are using MSMQ or a File you need to use e.g. Biztalk to process them. Biztalk can consume the message and do futher processing.

You can also manually pick up and process them.

For sure if you don't do anything additional the files will be pending for ever.

Right, BizTalk is what I should have mentioned I do not want to use.

I am just trying to figure out, where would I configure, that for example, if my packing slip is for customer 1000, I need to e-mail the file to "somebody@gmail.com", or put on a certain FTP server or whatever.

I understand manually - especially if it's a File system adapter. But even then I would assume that it would be some sort of 3rd party application that would poll the contents of the outbound folder and send the files along based on some configuration - again, would this config need to be inside the actual 3rd party app?

You have just two options - either it will be handled by AX (e.g. you'll implement your own adapter doing whatever you like), or it will be handled by some other application (and you'll do whatever you like in the other app).

I've seen people implementing custom adapters for additional file processing, sending via web services or saving to FTP sites. But often you simply have two systems pointing to the same folder - one writing file there and the other reading them (many applications include their own integration frameworks).

Of course, you can write your logic (e.g. sending e-mails) in a separate service rather then as a custom adapter, if you want.

Well, that confirms my understanding of it, and that sucks.

Because I am really reading this as "AIF does not really work out of the box" :(

No, it says "AIF does not cover everything that anybody might want". A lot of projects happily live with AIF without any custom adapters or such things (just with message transformations).
