Not sure what went wrong with your free trial however you can reset it and check.
You can go to the Dynamics 365 Administration Center-->Select Org-->Edit
change the type from "Production" to "Sandbox".
Once done
Go back to the Dynamics 365 Administration Center-->Select Org-->Reset

you should probably go in your CRM Admin center in the Office 365 Administration. There you should check if your organization is still activated.
