RE: GL Migration Question
Writing to GL history tables could occur in two cases, the first one is as you have already done previously; posting GL transactions to an open year, and close the year through financial year-end closing.
Another case is to post directly to a closed year, which should be initially allowed from the General Ledger setup. For instance, on your current operational GP environment, if both 2012 and 2011 years are closed, posting journal entries within dates that fall either in 2012 or 2011 will write directly to history table (GL3000).
Of course you need to take into consideration the adjustment that will be automatically made to beginning balances in the open year. Further reading on "Posting to a historical year in General Ledger" can be reached as shown below;
- On year-end closing window in General Ledger, press F1
- Under related items, you can find an article on "Posting to History" as shown below;
As for the General Ledger setup, you can see there is a check box to allow posting to history, when checked, you will be able to post to history tables.
After all, choosing with which scenario to go depends on your case. If you want to migrate balances to a year that is already closed, you have no option but the second one. If you are migrating balances to a new GP environment, I think you need to go with you current option (posting ending balances and closing the year)
Hope this helps,
