Report dictionary locations

Posted on by 2,280

There is a configuration difference between our client's terminal server and local client installations of Dynamics GP. In both server and local installations, the Reports.dic location reference in the Dynamics.set files is in a shared network location. However, the Dex.ini ReportDictionaryPath for our server installation references the default local location (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\Data\), while the local installations reference the same shared network location as the Reports.dic location in the Dynamics.set file. Subsequently, the rest of the report dictionary locations in the Dynamics.set file for the server installation reference the default local location, but for the local installations the rest of the report dictionaries are in the shared network location.
My questions are as follows:
1. Are all customizations made via Report Writer stored only in the Reports.dic file or might some Report Writer customizations affect other report dictionaries?
2. Can, and if so how can, other report customizations be made outside of Report Writer that would affect report dictionaries (thereby requiring the customized dictionary to be maintained in a shared network location)?
3. Can you make a recommendation for a standard regarding whether the Dex.ini ReportDictionaryPath and the report dictionaries other than Reports.dic should be in a local or shared network location? (I’m assuming the Reports.dic file should be in a shared network location.)

Each REPORTS.DIC is separate. There is no way changing something in one would affect another. Having separate REPORTS.DIC file can be troublesome when tryng to roll out updates. Not to mention when setting up security and who uses what version of the reports.

    2. Can, and if so how can, other report customizations be made outside of Report Writer that would affect report dictionaries (thereby requiring the customized dictionary to be maintained in a shared network location)?

There is no way to make changes outside of ReportWriter. Eventually you need to import whatever changes you have made back into ReportWriter. You can create a package file and modify that file via NotePad but you would still need to import the changes back into ReportWriter.

    3. Can you make a recommendation for a standard regarding whether the Dex.ini ReportDictionaryPath and the report dictionaries other than Reports.dic should be in a local or shared network location? (I’m assuming the Reports.dic file should be in a shared network location.)

In the DYNAMICS.SET file you can specify the locations of the DYNAMICS.DIC, FORMS.DIC and REPORTS.DIC file. It is best to point the DYNAMICS.DIC locally so to reduce network traffic. The FORMS.DIC and REPORTS.DIC files are best kept in a shared location. This way you know all users are using the same version of the reports. The only exception here are the computers where someone may be making changes. It is best not to work on modifying forms and reports while other users are in GP. So make the changes on your development computers and then copy them out to the shared folder once all users are out of GP.
