Can't Update Leads Record In Journey

We are struggling to find a way to update the lead record in a real-time journey. There are a bunch of reasons we want to do this, but here are a couple:

Being able to see which leads are in a journey, fell out of a journey, or completed a journey. (We can't see this information provided anywhere)
Being able to act on this automatically, such as assigning a customer to a new segment or journey after it has been completed or depending on customer choices.

We have looked at a number of options and haven't found anything. One is just an updating of fields on the Lead and we only found source customer journey, which does not work for us.

The closest option is to use a custom trigger and Power Automation on the backend. However, custom triggers require a user interaction and we are just looking for an action to trigger automatically at that point in the workflow.

Is there another way we can accomplish updating the lead record at any point in a journey without user interaction? Or at least is there a way to get lead information about the journeys a lead has been in and the status?
