Trouble with checking inventory from different stores

Hidy ho all,

I have a client who is having some issues with their hq setup.

They have 3 stores, each is using rms 2.04, and each has a machine dedicated as an sql server and hq client.  With one store having the hq server running.

The issue they are having is, when they go to check their inventory from one store to annother, they get an error saying "Attempts to contact HQ failed".  No error message, or any identifiers of any kind that would help to narrow down the error message.

I've re-created the setup in my office (as best I can), and am getting the same error.

Every one is using the same version of rms, and is running the same update.  And the hq client and server apps are able to communicate perfectly fine.  What would allow the store client/server to communicate fine, but not allow the stores to check each others inventories?

Edit: just to keep this thread up to date, I did some reading up on that error online.  And I think I have part of the problem solved.  I had the hq client tab filled out to point to the server.  My machine at the office, doesn't have a static ip address, so I pointed the hq client to 127.0.0.0, and it took a little longer to time out and throw the afore mentioned error.  It does still throw the error though

2nd Edit: I've also read that when one attempts to see the inventories of other stores, the headquaters client is supposed to show that connection attempt in its output.  I'm afraid that the connection attempt doesn't show up on my machines hq client.

    Ok, so an update.

I setup annother spare machine as the other store, with a very similar configuration (except the database is the second store's database).

Also, the hq had 2 old stores in it.  One is no longer under the same ownership, and the other no longer exists.  So I marked them inactive.

When I go into database>items, select an item from the list, and click on the check stores button, the store quantities window comes up, and in the bottom most pane the status bar comes up with the contacting hq text directly above it.  The status bar fills and empties twice, then says 'attempts to contact hq failed'.

this happens on both machines.  Also, the hq client doesn't have any info in it regarding the attempt to contact the hq server appearing in it.

Both machines have their hq client pointing to 127.0.0.0, over port 34200, and the hq server is listening on 34200.  All machines can ping eachother, and function independently of the hq with no issues.  When I create a worksheet, both machines can process it without issues.

So far as I can tell, the only issue is checking the inventories at either location.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate the help

You need to check the configurations under Store Operations Administrator. In HQ client tab,the address should be the server with the HQ client

    Thanks for the reply.

The server with the hq client is my local machine.  Hence the link local address.

Check this tab and see whether it is configured.

It is.  The address is 127.0.0.0, on port 34200 for the hq client

    Matt

The stores and HQ can process worksheets 401 and others without error?  If so, try this

In Operations admin under File-> Config-> HQ Client, Put in the PC Name or IP that has the HQ Client running on it put in port 34202 hit OK.  then make sure in the op mgr that there is a store id( the store ID isnt really needed but the info from admin is).

Then restart SO Manager if open.

Also, If you enabled "Always display 'Find' windows for Items" this can cause a slightly different issue with check for quantities.

    Thanks for the reply,

First and foremost, both machines can process work sheets without any errors.

Next, I have tried putting the name of the machine instead of the ip, but when I did I wasn't able to connect to the hq machine.  both of the store machines are using dynamic ips' but I have tried putting their current ip instead of the link local address, with the same results.

I will be stick both machines with static Ip's, and we'll see what happens.

Where do I find the "Always display 'Find" windows for items" setting?

I think you miss understand the setup.

SO Admin holds the ip address for the local HQ Client.  I normally put this on the same server as the database.  Under the SO Admin configuration for the store settings, there is a hq client tab.  This points to the local HQ Client.  Then the HQ Client will point to the HQ Server, and too the local database.

If you don't have the HQ Client (local) ip address in the SO Admin configuration, you will get the timeout.

so the connection is like this.   SO Manager/POS -> Read Setting in SO Admin -> Connect to Local HQ Client (local) -> HQ Client Connects to HQ Server (internet) -> HQ Server sends requested info.

Ok, So I changed my configuration to match the above picture.  The address is now 127.0.0.1 (instead of .0) and the port is now 34202 (instead of 34200).

The server is still listening on port 34200, but the hq client had no trouble contacting the server though.

I still get the same error when trying to check the inventories from other stores.

Thats how I thought the hq setup worked.  I wasn't sure though.  Thanks for that!

Also, you mentioned the setting for always displaying the find windows for items, where is that setting?

You want to enter the local IP address for the PC that runs HQ Client such as 192.168.1.101. If the address is not static, enter the PC's name on the network such as POS2.

The port numbers are different because one is used by the local PC contacting HQ Client on the local network while the other is used for HQ Client to contact HQ. They are two separate operations. When you click Check Stores a request is sent to HQ Client on the local network to contact HQ and query the quantity table at HQ. That table is accurate as of the last time each store location connected to HQ on its 401 schedule. The table results are then displayed at the PC that clicked Check Stores.
