Track smaller pieces from inventory items

Dear 

i have a senario , where i am doing production , in the BOM , i have a Steel Rode that is 6 M long, during the picking , since not all jobs are the same the working depending on the design of the produced item , could cut 4 M from the 6 M and keep 2 M as spare to be used in another job

they want to track these pieces (remaining 2 m) because it could be useful for another job, 

i researched the catch weight, and the tags to see if this could be a solution for me .
