Guidelines for creating Excel worksheet to use as an integration

Posted on by 105

Help!  New to GP and cannot find documentation anywhere that will guide me through formatting an excel spreadsheet to import into GP.  The system guides do not address this.  Does anyone know where I can find guidance?

The issue at hand is importing payroll transactions, but I like to understand what I'm doing so I wanted to know if there were general guidelines that would help for any types of import.

Tracy, shoot me an email and I'll send you some templates that will get you pointed in the right direction.  And heed Leslie and Richard's advice too.

Tracy, Leslie makes excellent points. What type of data are you trying to import. There are some excellent tools that allow you to import directly into GP from Excel without using Integration Manager. Excel does have a nasty habit of trimming away leading zeroes so heed Leslie's advice.

    Hi Tracy,

There is no guide that I'm aware of, but here are some rules that I can think of.

    • Define a range. Integration Manager does not work off of the tab names.
    • Don't use any reserved words as your header record. If you don't know what they are, avoid words like Date. Use MyDate instead, or something like that.
    • Only include the columns and rows in your range that you want to import, do not include a bunch of blank columns.
    • Don't use the same column name twice in the same range.
    • Make sure the correct data type is used by Integration manager. (string, number, etc)
    • If you want to import 0000, make sure you have it formatted as Text in Integration Manager. Put a single quote in front of the contents. So the cell would look like '0000

That's my quick run down, I'm sure my fellow forum members will add more.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
