Upgrade steps from GP9 to GP2015

Posted on by

I am going to be doing an upgrade to our GP system in a few days. I was wondering what were the upgrade paths coming from GP9 to GP 2015R2.

Thanks for all the good information.

I was able to get the upgrade finished successfully in one night and since everything went so smooth I actually decided to go straight to GP2016. There were a few issues at the beginning that were difficult to get past and without partner source (it was under maintenance during the upgrade), but once i was able to get to GP10 SP5 everything was smooth sailing from there on out.

GP has a document that will tell you what build your version 9 software needs to be on and also build of the new version is compatible with the old.

There are some good links on Victoria Yudin's website about upgrades from older versions:

    victoriayudin.com/.../gp-9-0-and-older

The upgrade path to get to GP2010 was copied from Microsoft here: www.njevity.com/.../dynamics-gp-2010-upgrade-paths.

Microsoft's document on upgrading to 2015 notes that you have to be on at least GP2010 to do the upgrade. The MS document is in CustomerSource here:

    mbs.microsoft.com/.../HOT_TOPIC_MDGP2015Upgrade.

Be sure to read the HOT TOPIC for each upgrade along the way because there are some 'gotchas' that you'll want to be aware of. They have the gotcha's and how to check for and resolve them. Do run the pre-queries they want you to run, I have myself run into some of the HOT TOPIC issues. Look at the system requirements for each version. You may run into a situation where the old software will not run on the new server and vice versa. In that case, restore the old databases to the new server and THEN install the new GP software. It will sense the older version is there an will go on with the upgrade.

This should give you the relevant links you need to get you on your way.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

I know i didnt specify what version of GP9 i was coming from in my original question but before upgrading to GP10, GP9 must be upgraded to the latest version.

Thanks for your concern Leslie and Tim. I have done many upgrades before, but most have been GP10 or higher so I really just needed to know if there was another step to go from GP9 to GP10. I actually have a virtual machine with all the necessary software for the upgrade that I have used many times coming from GP10 and going to GP2015.

I was trying to think how to reply to this last night, Leslie has covered it well.

I would add something to adjust your expectations. Personally I would expect to spend a min of a couple of weeks for an upgrade project (note I'm giving it status of project), from researching through testing to performing the upgrade.

Your proposed upgrade path is going to be a lot more involved (risky) jumping through those versions so do make certain you do a test upgrade first.

    Hi Alex,

If this is your first venture down this path, there is NO WAY I would attempt this alone. You need the help of an Experienced consultant to get you through all of the things you'll need to look out for.

If you're just looking for path you can go a couple of ways, here's two:

    GP9 to GP1010

    GP2010 to GP2015.

On Customer Source there is documentation that will walk you through the whole process. Remember, build numbers matter. Some combinations need to go through interim updates to get to be compatible. You are also most likely changing your SQL server and operating system.

The information is all out there, but this is serious business. I think you would find a lot of willing participants on this forum that you could engage to help you.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
