Migrating Custom Report Layouts from Dev to Test

I understand that custom report layouts are not part of a report object, so if you built a FOB or TXT file of a Report in the Development Environment, only built-in layouts are included.

So how then do you migrate your custom report layouts from your dev to test database so users can test it?

It looks like you need to Export it from Report Layout Selection, Custom Reports, which will create a .rdl file, then in your test environment, you would need to first create a new custom layout (check the "Insert RDLC Layout" option) then you can use Import Layout to replace that default layout with the one exported from dev.

Is this really the only way to do it? Not a very clean way to migrate changes from one environment to the next.

Create the report in the ID range 50000-99999 and then why not just make a page action - lets say you want to have them test a Sales Invoice.

Just add a button for Sales Invoice report on the Posted Sales Invoice and call it something like Sales Invoice Test - then they have the same data aswell to test on.

I don't think you understand my question at all. I am assigning a custom layout to an existing report, in this case 25 Account Schedule. All i am asking is whether the migration procedure is as I described above. I don't see why I need to make any of the additional changes you suggested or create a new report. I am merely trying to use a custom layout for an existing report so when any user runs the report, they get the custom layout instead of the built-in one.

    Hi,

Short of modifying the report itself, the import/export option mentioned is how it is done.

    Thanks Brad for confirming this.
