What would cause SL reports to print in portrait instead of landscape?
*This post is locked for comments
Hello Chuck,
Is this issue workstation specific?
There are a few different places this setting can come from.
First, this can come from the actual .rpt file. If the report is customized, you will find it in the usr_rpts folder in the SL program files. Open this report in Crystal reports and go to file > printer setup. In here you should find a setting for portrait or landscape. This may be set to portrait when really you would like it to be set to landscape.
Please check this section.
Next, you can check the printer settings within SL. In SL go to file > printer setup. Click Setup. Check the portrait/landscape settings here as well.
Finally, click start > go to printers and faxes. Locate the printer and check the settings on the actual printer for portrait/landscape.
Let me know what you find.
Carolyn
I will follow your instructions above and get back to you.
Thanks a lot,

The printing issue is affecting all reports and batches. They only way the user can print in landscape is if she changes her local default printer to landscape, but then her AP checks print in landscape instead of portrait. Her computer had a virus before this issue began just to give you more info. I will wait to hear back from you.
Thanks,
Hi Chuck,
I suppose this printer is set as the windows default printer. If so, do they have another printer she could try setting as the windows default printer? If so, change the windows default printer and then shut down SL and restart SL. Then print something - does it print correctly?
If they don't have another printer to test, try downloading a newer printer driver. After installing the new driver, be sure to shut down SL and restart it as it holds some of the printer settings in a buffer. Exiting SL clears out the buffer. Then test the more recent driver.
If a newer printer driver doesn't resolve it, try a generic printer driver.
What version of SL is being used in this case?
They are using 7.0.
I have suggested these resolutions to our user.
I will keep you posted.
The printer driver was reloaded and the user sent the following message:
"It really didn’t have any effect on locking in the printer default for Solomon.
I still have to ‘set up’ the printer every time before doing anything that will
produce a report."
Chuck,
It sounds like the user has the settings in SL set to “use windows default printer” and “save as default”. This would mean that all of the printer settings are coming from windows. This makes sense then – if the user changes the orientation at the OS level (windows) it matriculates to the SL system but I think that’s a one-way relationship. I don’t think setting the orientation level in SL is going to override the windows level when SL is being told to use the windows default printer.
I would wonder if we can clarify that the user has the setting “use windows default printer’ and “save as default”. Can they try this:
1. Rename the user-specific Solomon.ini file (this will allow us to set up all new printer settings when the new one gets created).
2. Log into SL and go to printer setup.
3. Click Setup.
4. Choose the appropriate printer from the drop-down.
5. Click OK.
6. Click OK.
This will be telling SL not to use the windows default printer but will be setting the printer at the SL level. I wonder if it will then read in the orientation properly. I would also have the user check the user-specific Solomon.ini file (after allowing it to recreate) and see if it has something specifying orientation. In mine I have a:
[Print Default]
PrinterOrientation=No
I wonder what the user's Solomon.ini file contains?
Finally, when the user selects the new printer orientation from within SL (by going to Printer options > settings and changing it there) are they then checking the “save as default” checkbox and clicking OK? If not, maybe they can try it as a test. This act should update the Solomon.ini file and would tell us if the issue stems from the ini not being updated properly with the orientation setting.

Thanks for getting back to me again on this issue. I will try this fix next week and get back to you.
We unchecked the Use Windows Default Printer checkbox and clicked the Default button. It looks like this solved the issue.
Thanks for all your help,
