I am trying to change the layout of my check. I go into report writer and change the report but this does not change anything when I go back into dynamics.

Once you've made your changes, you then need to make sure the security is set to go to the modified version of the report and not the original. This is done through the Alternate Modified Forms and Reports window (Administration >> Setup >> System >> Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports). By default, everyone should be set to the DEFAULT USER ID. Change your report to the modified version using that ID. If your users have a different ID assigned to them then you'd need to switch it to whatever ID they are using.
