GP 8.0 to GP 2010 R2 upgrade

Hello,

I have a client who is looking to go from GP 8.0 SP 5 to GP 2010 R2.  I understand that the upgrade path requires them to go from GP 8 to GP 10, then to GP 2010.  Currently, they are running SQL 2005 Express SP 3 (2005.090.4053.00) 32-Bit.

If I were to take these Backups from the old server and restore them to SQL 2008 R2 Express 64-Bit on a new server, could I successfully upgrade from GP 8 SP5 to GP 10 FP1?

The reason I ask is I am not sure whether or not I need to install SQL 2005 Express SP3 on the development server, do the upgrade to 10 FP1, then install SQL 2008 Express R2, migrate the GP 10 databases to SQL 2008, then do the GP 2010 R2 upgrade.

I know this may be confusing, but any assistance would be appreciated.

    You can take the SQL Server 2005 Express backups of your GP8.0 SP5  and restore them directly on SQL Server 2008.  Be sure to follow the steps outlined in KB article 878449 - mbs2.microsoft.com/.../KBDisplay.aspx to capture the user logins and passwords. If using SQL Server 2005 Express you will probably need to install the admin tools (SSMS and so on) to be able to run the script.

    Once on SQL Server 2008, you can then pop in your GP10 FP1 media and begin the upgrade.
