Excel 2013 not able to open .xls file from MS Dynamics 2011

I am having problem opening up my exported excel file from MS Dynamics 2011 to open up in my excel 2013

Error message” excel cannot open the file ‘ Active.xls’ because the file format of file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

When I did this on my excel 2003 version I didn’t get this error message. I am thinking this might be that excel 2013 is not able to open exported excel from MS Dynamics 2011.

Could you proffer a workaround as my client is not interested in upgrading MS Dynamics 2015.

The message as shown below you usually get for exported excel file .. when you open in MS Excel, and when you click on Yes, it open it.
