How do I prevent allocation of an unreleased product?

Our business model is such that we will build a new product to a certain inventory level before we start shipping. Our goal is to have "x" amount on-hand in finished goods before we announce to our customer base that we are shipping the product. The problem we are seeing is that, once we report the work order as finished and move the product into a location in our warehouse, the product is being automatically allocated and reserved for open sales orders.

I tried putting an outbound block on the location but that does not prevent the sales order from automatically allocating. What else can I try?

Have you tried to stop the product from default Order setting, for sales order..????

Hi Cryerson,

If you are using R3, you could use 'Inventory status' for this purpose.

We are not on R3 yet, though it is coming...

I looked at using the “stopped” functionality in the order settings area, but we still want to be able to take sales orders for this item, create work orders, and move product around our warehouse.

Consider putting it into an unreleased warehouse and then transferring it into the real one in the system when ready. If you are using advanced warehousing this will cause you issues with empty locations that are not empty when you mirror the unreleased warehouse locations with the real one.
