Changing standard field's data type

My goal is to change the data type (from Single Line of Text to Option Set) of standard field "Subject" that appears on Appointment Entity. People at StackOverflow say it is not possible. If it is true, should I make the "Subject" field invisible and add the custom field instead?

It is true - you cannot change the data type of a field once it has been created.

A custom field with the original hidden is a good option.

So it is not possible to change the data type even programmatically, using SDK?

Afraid not - the data type used flows down to the database and there isn't any functionality built in to handle converting data types in this instance. The results could end up being unpredictable at times.

    Thanks a lot!
