Hello there

We are currently runnging MS SBS 2003 R2 premium with SQL 2005 and  Great Plains v 10 and are looking at upgading our current server hardware and maybe software to the new SBS 2011.

We are looking at breaking out the sql to its own box and using the 2008 SQL Express version as we only have 10 users with less then 10,000 transactions a month.

Is it possible to go from the full version of SQL 2005 to the 2008 r2 SQL Express version??

Tami

    Tami,

You can do that.  2008 r2 SQL Express has a 10Gb per database size limit.  Check that first.

The Express version will not have the SQL Agent so you will not be able to schedule maintenance and backup procedures though SSMS. You will need to create batch files and fill them will OSQL commands. It would be a good idea to dump SBS altogether as it is best to not have SQL on your domain controller. I would suggest you use SQL 2008 R2 Workgroup that will give you everyhting except mirroring. Otherwise, there is no reason why you cannot detach your databases off your current SQL 2005 instance and attach them to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

Thank you Tim....is that all GP company databases combined?? We have a couple of copies of our company for testing etc....

Richard...as I understand it the new 2011 version of the SBS Premium version (which is over twice the price of previous versions) allows you to break out the full SQL server onto another box to resolve performance issues. We have been running the SBS since its inception in 1997 and Great Plains since 2000 ........on proper server hardware have not experienced said performance issues. Now that we are expanding our use of Great Plains from 4 concurrent users to 10, I am looking at breaking the SQL out to its own box to overcome any future issue we will\may experience with the expanded use of Great Plains and the manufacturing module. If I can run the FREE version of the SQL as we have well then less the 20 concurrent users on a seperate server ...then it would be cost effective solution without impacting performance....no??

Any thoughts or suggestions are always greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Tami,

The way I read it would be 10GB per database (DYNAMICS can be up to 10GB and your company(ies) databases up to 10GB each).  If you are in Management Studio, right click on a database, select Properties from the menu and then look at Size expressed in MB.

I have not priced out SQL recently, but for a server license and 10 CAL's it should not be that bad. I believe you can also purchase SQL Server Runtime for $199 plus user CAL's directly from your GP reseller. The only caveat here is that you are only allowed to have GP databases on this instance. As long as you do not mind writing your own batch files to perform backups and other SQL maintenance procedures and each database is less than 10gb in size you will be good. SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup would give you everything. I would go out and shop around for best prices and then make the choice.
