Speed of Management Reporter

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello:

We have Management Reporter 2013 CU13 on the Legacy Provider.

I know that this is a broad question.  But, is there a way to make the reports generate faster?

True, we have 15 entities being reported on in our trees.  And, most of the reports are generating at a good clip.

But, if we run reports as Consolidated with "Financial and Account" or "Financial, Account and Transaction", the report generation can take as long as thirty minutes.  I discovered this, last Friday.

So, today, I modified settings in the MRServiceHost.exe.config file in order to prevent any possible timeouts.  I have not had a chance to see if this has caused an improvement.  I want to start by, again, asking if there are additional ways of improving the speed.

Thank you!  Much appreciated!

John

The tree has no rollups, but the Column Definitions are a little complex.  That would account for the somewhat slowness, as well.

That's pretty decent.  MR is a fairly intensive resource drain but I'd think that should handle it.  The recommended is a quad core processor which it sounds like you are just running a dual core.  There's also going to be processing on the SQL server as well.  I'd just monitor the resources on both when running the report to see if it's maxing out or not.

But if the report is complex with lots going on in the row and column, you have 15 entities and pulling transactional detail, I don't see 30 minutes being that out of the norm.

Just remember that when you have a tree and mark all, it is doing transactional detail for every unit of that tree.  Is it only 15 total units on the tree or are there breakouts of those entities that have individual rollups?

    Hi There, Matt!

Yes, the MR service is on its own server, which is a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise terminal server with service pack 1 and 20.0 GB of RAM and a 3.06 GHz processor.  The specs say "2 processors", in parentheses.

What are the specs of your server?  Is the MR service on it's own server or the same server as the SQL server?

In my opinion, 30 minutes for 15 entities with transactional detail doesn't sound that bad.  But that also depends on the volume.
