Microsoft Dynamics GP Change Inventory Accounts across all Clases

Can anyone tell me the best way to update 175 inventory classes to new GL accounts for inventory and inventory offset.  Is the best way through SQL and update both the inventory class table and the Item Master table?  Are there any other tables?  Anyway to do this through the front end of GP?

Thank you!

RE: Microsoft Dynamics GP Change Inventory Accounts across all Clases

    Hi Lisa,

The best way, in my opinion is to ALWAYS use the user interface. You know that all of the proper tables are updated if you do it that way. That said, we all know that modifying the SQL tables is sometimes the only practical solution.

In the case you described, here are some other solutions:

    1. First, of course, is to open each class you want to change, change it and roll it down. You can do this manually, or (better) develop a 'mail-merge' macro to do it for you. Changing 175 classes would certainly be boring, but it's really not that big of a deal. This is, in my opinion, the best solution if number 2 doesn't work for you.

    2. I don't know how many total inventory classes you have, but if all of the classes (or most of the classes) are using the same accounts, I would blank out those accounts at the class level and put them at the company level. (Administration | Setup | Posting | Posting Accounts; select the Inventory series).

Do either of these work for you?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

I would simply choose the Macro method, rather than SQL. When changing the accounts on the class levels, Dynamics GP pops up a message to "roll down" the changes into items within the class.

Therefore, record a macro on the Item Class window to type in the class name, then go to the accounts to fill the correct new accounts accordingly, then to click roll down in order for the changes to take effect on the child entities.
