Sorting/ Pruduct name

Posted on by 100

I have in the CRM product names with different lengths including letters and digits. I want to sort them numerically, not alphabetically as right now. I can't change the names adding eg. zeros at the beginning to equal the length or add another column only for sorting. Is there any other way in Dynamics?

    Hi,

Unfortunately there is no way to change the field type once it is created. Also, even if you create a new field, you could choose either number or text which means you cannot have both. If you choose text then you will have the same issue (i.e. 4, 49,5,51 ABC etc)

So unless you create a new field of type number, you won't be able to sort this correctly.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Pawelk3,

You could create another field called "Numerical Ordering", then export all the products for Reimport. Update this field with the ordering you require and reimport these products. (Reference: www.powerobjects.com/.../mass-editing-dynamics-crm-2011-records-using-microsoft-excel)

That way, the name of the product remains unchanged and your view can sort by the "Numerical Ordering" column instead of the name.

I know, but it is not possible to change this field to another datatype because of used letters in the names of products...

There is not any other way other than either adding leading zeros or another column for sorting..

Views are sorted based on columns datatype, and you column is text datatype, that's why it is sorted by alphabetically.
