RMS and Sql Server 2008 R2 sp2 problems

I have been recovering from either a malicious virus and / or hard disk corruption that seemed to only affect my .net framework.  After cleaning up the .net framework I re installed the Sql server 2008 r2 sp2 express. I reinstalled RMS v2. current build .  I cant get RMS admin to play with SQL server 2008 R2 express.  I have read some other post that said to install 2008 r2 express 1st then install RMS skip 2005. I have tried this and limited success on win 7 pro ws.  But when I try it on  xp pro ws machine its not rms does not allow me to connect to my 2008 r2 sql instance.  I have enabled name pipes, tcp ip, etc. I have installed the w2k5 backward compatible pkg but its not working.  I have been installing uninstalling in every combo I can think of.  I know its something stupidly simple but I dont know what it is.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as.  3 days without a workable POS is crazy.

If you are connecting with TCPIP make sure you are using correct listening port. Also make sure server name or IP is right.

Sql 2008 R2 increased surface level security.  Named pipes and CLR are turned off by default.  You will definately need the Backwork Compatibilty pack.   Also make sure to unblock sql server in the windows firewall.  port 1433 by default.  Also make sure to install in mixed security mode.  -  this will require you to type in an sa password.

We use 2008 R2 express for all version of RMS.   It works.

This is a related question about Backward Compatibility with SqlExpr2008. There is no SQLServer2008_BC only SQLServer2005_BC and when I try to install it informs me that it can NOT because of my OS which is Win764. So how do I get BC ?

You can use the following link to download the "SQLServer2005_BC_x64.msi" file if you are using the x64 system. There are other option provided for download as well for itanium and x86. Make sure what platform you using to run the RMS and then download the BC accordingly.

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Click on "Download" and it opens up with all available options for download for different platforms.
