Dynamics GP in the cloud

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

What are some of the experiences users have had with GP in the cloud?  Are there any particular partners providing exceptional Cloud services for GP?

Microsoft announced intentions for a 100% web client with system database Multi-tenancy in its next release at Convergence this passed year.  Here is a great blog series on how it will be done.  blogs.msdn.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-gp-quot-12-quot-web-client-architecture-series-by-mariano-gomez.aspx

Have Microsoft indicated when they might offer a true GP cloud solution?

I agree it will be a long and expensive effort to push GP to the web but I think it will be the only way to compete in the ERP market in the future.  The push for cloud solutions is out of control right now and the Federal Government is mandating that agencies deploy a certain percentage of all applications to the web.   We just recently lost our first GP client to SalesForce.com because they had a mandate to go all cloud.  We pitched the GP in the cloud solution but their IT people didn't embrace the thin-client architecture.  I can certainly understand their hesitation.

Without TS or Citrix or something similiar, then GP would need to be re-developed to be truly web based.   As complete and complex as GP is, it seems to me that it will be a long, long time before it is truly web bases.   Also have to ask: "Is it worth the development time and effort?".

The thin-client solutions often will respond quicker since they are running on beefy servers but if you have a low bandwidth connection the mouse and image transfers can get choppy.  All application processing is performed on the remote servers. Cloud based applications distribute processing between the Database Server, Web Server and local web browser client.  Thin-client applications typically have a better interface since they don't have to be designed around the constraints of the web browser.   Best option is to test drive the various solutions and perform direct comparisons.  Also, depending on your requirements, it can be tough to customize GP in a cloud environment.  It depends on the Host provider and how they have deployed the solution.  We have seen some vendors place significant restrictions on what can and cannot be customized.   You will run into a similar problem with some of the traditional cloud based applications.

Is that likely to make it faster or slower than the traditional cloud based solution?

Re: Dynamics GP in the cloud

I think it is tough to classify GP as a cloud based solution considering it is still a client\server application.   Current solutions running GP in the "cloud" rely on underlying thin-client solutions such as Microsoft Terminal Services or Citrix ZenApp to deploy the application over the Internet.  It isn't a traditional cloud based solution like Google Apps or something similar that present data in a Web Browser.  Running GP in a cloud will require a client agent or browser plug-in and will transfer screen shots and mouse movements of actions actually performed within the GP client installed on a remote server.    Microsoft has gone more traditional cloud solutions on the CRM product line but not yet for GP.
