TempDB size has suddenly grown in size

Posted on by 100

I found that my TempDB has suddenly grown in size to 12 GB from  less than 1 GB earlier.

I am using GP 8.0 with SQL 2000.

I would like to know if there is a way or any SQL Script to shrink the TempDB to its actual size.

Also would like to know which is a good backup software (free or paid) for taking unattended backup of SQL Databases and user datafiles.

Thanks

Go into SSMS and check the properties of the tempdb database.  If you click on Files what are the setting for minimum size?

Thanks for your reply. I have done a server reboot as well as Stop and restarted the SQL service but of no use. The size seems to be the same. I am using the purchased copy of SQL Server 2000.

I don't think that is an unreasonable size - we run a 160GB tempdb  spread over many physical files (as do push GP hard). If it needs the space for queries and reports SQL server will grow the TempDB. Growing a DB is a time expensive operation.

So shrink it if you wish, but if it grows again, then let it be, this will be its natural size for your install and give you better performance being left to manage itself. Disk is cheap, peoples time is not.

You can simply stop and start the SQL service and the tempdb log file will shrink. Just make sure no one is using any application that uses SQL at the time.  A server reboot would serve the same purpose.  Are you using SQL Express or fully purchased copy of SQL?

You may like to have a look at below article link to shrink the Database.

Make sure to take the DB backup before shrinking the DB.

There are lot of options available for backing up the DB. For this google have the answer -:)
