How do I add a drop down box to the Opportunities section?

I am trying to figure out how to set up a new field called "Type". I would like this field to have a drop down box for options to choose to fill this field.

Is this possible?

I have tried to follow some directions that I have found online but none seem to be working.

Thanks.

Acutally I am just trying to create a drop down box in the opportunities section to sum it up.

    Can anyone help me out?

You will need to be a system admin or customizer in order to do this. Go to the opportunity section and on the top tab section (above the top tool bar) click "Customize" the farthest to the right. Click "Customize Entity" and a new window will open. On the left navigation bar of this new window, under Opportunity click "Fields." Here you can create a new field.  Click "New" and in order to get a drop down list type of field, where it says "Type" choose option set. Then you can add what you want to the drop down list. Once you are done click Save and Close. Now you need to add your new field to the form. Go to "Forms" under Opportunity on the left navigation bar. Click on the main form type. Add that field onto the form. Once you are down, save and close. Don't forget to click "Publish All Customizations" otherwise your changes won't show up!

    Thank you! That worked great.

Now I am trying to modify an existing field that was transferred over from Salesforce and it is not allowing me to make changes to it. (I would like to add a drop down box for this too) The options for "Type" and "Format" are "Ghosted" out. (Grey and not able to click on them)

    Any ideas on that one?

Once a field is created you are unable to change the type of field it is. So you won't be able to change a text box to a drop down list, etc. The way I would handle that is to add a new field in addition to the one you already have and then mass update the records using an advanced find. Sort on the value of your old field and then mass update to add that value to the new field. You will want to make sure that you don't have any customizations, processes(workflows) or javascript running on your old field though before you remove it. It is best practice to always make changes like this in your dev envrionment first.

Thank you for letting me know this isn't possible. I will stop beating my head against the wall now :)

    Have a good weekend!
