Import a view from SQL Server Management Studio into Visual Studio

Hi everyone,

I am currently working on my first reporting project. The information I need to report on is available via 3/4 different tables within AX. In order to simplify this (as I am not well versed with coding), I created a View in SQL Server Management Studio which now shows all the information I need. I am wondering how I can now use this view as data source for my report? And is this the best way to create this report since i'm new to reporting.

Thanks in advance,

Henna

You shouldn't access data in AX database directly; you should always do it through AX. Namely you should design a query or a view in AOT and then you can easily use it in a AX reports.

Going through AX will deal with partitions and data areas, enum values, will apply labels, allow you to use business logic defined in AX, will apply security and so on...

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for getting back. So would you recommend creating a query with the specified fields and using this as a direct datasource for visual studio? Because I have also done this but find that (as far as I can see) - the data is now showing correctly as I haven't specified the relationship between the tables.

Additionally - do you know of any material or resources where I can read up on this other than the reporting cookbook? As I am new to this.

    Thanks,

Using a query is a possible way. But if you say that your query doesn't work correctly, trying to use it in a report doesn't make sense. You should fix (and test) your query first. It seems you already know what's wrong...

Regarding documentation, you can look at TechNet: Development Tasks for Reporting, for instance (although the cookbook it pretty good).
