Hi all,
We have Finance and Operations, I'm new to it. I added custom fields to the fixed assets table and realized that the "Text" type fields only allow for 100 characters, I need at least double that. What are all the methods to increase this limit (if any) and which would you suggest based on experience?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
It will be best practices to create new string type EDT and set the string size as you required. So that you can map that EDT to your custom field created in Asset table.

In case you configured the custom fields via the user interface, you can find a form 'Custom fields' in the system adminitration menu. There you can find the custom field and change the text length and apply the changes.
If it was added via Visual Studio development, follow the suggestion from Girish to link an existing or new EDT to your fields which have another string length.
I was using the interface to the add the fields. Out of curiosity, do you know if there is a method to extend type "Text" max character limit through the interface and bypass the error? Here is the error thrown when saving over 100:

I guess through personalization(Interface) you can set the length of the text field up to 100 only. I think this is the limitation when you create field through personalization.
This is the standard functionality and I wont recommend it to customize or bypass it. It will be better if you add that field from backend.

When I wrote the blog mentioned by Girish, I was not aware of the 100-character limitation. I checked this in the source code and it is indeed intended to be limited to 100. There is no configuration for this. Technically, it would not be an issue, but I think Microsoft wanted to limit the record size in case there are 20 fields with long texts.
When I left Kaya Consulting, I copied all my blog posts and host them now on my private Dynamicspedia.com blog space. I updated the blog with this limitation: Custom fields: Handle with care (Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations) (dynamicspedia.com)
In case you need a larger size now, like Girish mentioned, you must consider creating the field via a development effort.
